What The Nissan Pathfinder Used to Be Compared to Now  

One of the most fascinating aspects of road-testing vehicles over a long period of time is watching them evolve. Sometimes you get to test the same nameplate across several generations. Experiencing the changes in styling, performance, and amenities. The Nissan Pathfinder is one vehicle that has certainly gone through different eras in its production life.  

Those of a certain age can remember a time when the Nissan Pathfinder was a body-on-frame off-roading contender that made the Toyota 4Runner sweat. During the same time that the 4Runner and Wrangler went years, decades without changing the formula, the Pathfinder went through major changes. The modern Nissan Pathfinder is a unibody, mid-size SUV offering three rows of seating with front-wheel drive.  

It’s become more of a suburban warrior than an off-road explorer. However, the Rock Creek trim level makes a real effort to hold on to the Pathfinder’s all-terrain pedigree. But is it enough? I wanted to find out.  

Updates for the 2026 Nissan Pathfinder  

For 2026, the Nissan Pathfinder received a mild styling refresh. The front grille, both front and rear bumpers, and exterior lighting have been restyled. Inside, the Pathfinder gained a new 12.3-inch center touchscreen and a more powerful wireless charging pad.  

Beyond those changes, the 2026 Nissan Pathfinder carries on from the previous model year. This three-row SUV is offered in 4 different trim levels: SV, SL, Rock Creek, Platinum. The SV and SL are front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an upgrade. Rock Creek and Platinum models come standard with all-wheel drive.  

2026 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek Off-Road Upgrades  

This road test features the 2026 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek. This is the only trim level with an off-road flare. It comes standard with AWD, 18-inch wheels with a Beadlock-styled design wrapped in all-terrain tires, and a tubular roof rack. Other upgrades include a Rock Creek exclusive front bumper and grille with LED fog lights. And of course, Rock Creek badging throughout.  

The Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek interior also receives leatherette-appointed upholstery with color-contrasting stitching. Another noteworthy upgrade featured on the Rock Creek is the slight increase in horsepower from its 3.5L V6. Standard power output is 284 horsepower, but the Rock Creek bumps it to 295 hp with a nine-speed automatic transmission.  

Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek Looks the Part  

All the upgrades fitted to the Nissan Pathfinder to turn it into a Rock Creek are necessary. This isn’t an SUV that only needs to look the part; it has to act too. Nissan’s intelligent 4WD system adds seven drive modes. These modes are located on a rotary dial on the center console. Among these modes are Sand and Mud/Rut.  

The Pathfinder Rock Creek trim level also comes with a 6,000-pound towing capacity. Lower trim levels offer 3,500 pounds of towing but can be rated for 6,000 if equipped with the Premium Package, which includes the hardware.  

Rock Creek is Off-Road Capable but Lacks Protection  

I took the Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek to the ranch to put its all-terrain power to use. Off-road, it handled itself well with poise. The 12.3-inch display screen offers a host of cameras, providing a 360-degree view of your surroundings.  

The only major downside is that the undercarriage offers no protection from the elements. Typically, off-road-focused SUV and pickup variants include a metal skid plate to protect vital drivetrain components. The Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek doesn’t come with skid plates as standard. Why? I don’t know, but it definitely should, especially when you look and see how low the fuel tank sits.  

A naked underbelly means I was anxious while driving over rugged, uneven terrain. Worried that one ambitious tree branch or sharp rock would jump up, get lodged somewhere it doesn’t belong, and cause damage. It’s like going mountain hiking in sandals. It doesn’t matter how strong your legs are or how many protein bars you packed, it only takes one bad step to ruin your whole day.  

Is not having skid plates a deal breaker? Only if you plan on using the Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek for extreme off-roading. If you’re driving to beaches or parks with paved parking lots, or live in an area prone to bad weather, this SUV can and will do the job.  

A Great Amount of Space Inside  

This mid-size SUV has three rows of seating. The model shown in the photos has captain’s chairs in the second row as part of the premium interior package ($2,270). This interior package also includes a panoramic moonroof and a removable second-row center console.  

Moving the seats is easy and effortless. The second-row seats slide up at the push of a button. Meanwhile, the third row drops down with a pull of a lightweight strap. Rear cargo space is decent with the third-row seats up, and great when they are folded down.  

One nice touch is the thick rubber mat that comes with the Pathfinder Rock Creek. This cargo mat is great for carrying dusty car parts, dogs, or anything that might spoil the carpet.  

The interior cabin provides great headroom for passengers to stretch out and stay comfortable. It’s also quiet thanks to excellent sound deadening. But the Rock Creek’s all-terrain tires generate a significant roar on the highway. Not loud enough to be a nuisance, but enough to notice. Thankfully, you can drown out the tire roar by cranking the audio system.  

The only downside is that Nissan reserved ventilated front seats for the Platinum only.  

Doesn’t Need a Turbo to Get Good Gas Mileage  

I love that the 2026 Nissan Pathfinder still uses a naturally aspirated 3.5l V6 engine. It doesn’t need a hybrid system or a turbocharger to make power. This straightforward V6 averaged over 20 mpg on the highway on regular gasoline. It also makes a responsive roar when you lean on the throttle.  

The nine-speed automatic transmission does its job but feels lackluster. I’d had to double-check it wasn’t a CVT the first time I drove it. That doesn’t affect the Nissan Pathfinder’s drivability unless you’re obsessed with driving like I am. Yet, this slushy gearbox does a great job of helping the V6 engine achieve good fuel economy.  

Competitively Priced for 2026

The 2026 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek as shown in this review had an MSRP of $50,215. The Nissan Pathfinder starts at $40,000 for the SV and $45,000 for the Rock Creek. That puts the mid-size SUV right around the average price for a new vehicle these days. For your money, you get three rows of comfortable seating, good fuel economy, a simple, provenly reliable V6 engine, and off-road capability.
