Kia Sportage Breaks Sales Records in the US

Lately, Kia has been crushing it. The same can be said about Hyundai and Genesis, but Kia in particular has been offering its customers a wide array of SUVs, sedans, and one seriously cool minivan. Among Kia’s vehicle lineup is the Sportage. This compact crossover SUV is Kia’s top seller. Setting a record in sales over the last two years.

In 2025 Kia sold over 180,000 Sportage SUVs. Over the summer I had a chance to drive not one but two variants of the 2026 Kia Sportage to try and find out what it is about this vehicle that has sales figures reaching for the stars.

Which is the Best Kia Sportage? Gas, Hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid

The two variants of the 2026 Kia Sportage featured in this review is the Sportage Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). However, there’s also a gasoline variant that should be mentioned because it offers its own benefits. Apart from being the most affordable of the three with a starting price under $30,000. The gasoline variant of the Kia Sportage also has more interior cargo space compared to the hybrid and PHEV because it doesn’t need to haul a battery pack or electric motors. Moreover, it doesn’t need to deal with the added weight either.

There’s also something to be said about the gasoline engine, a 2.5L four-cylinder producing 187 horsepower. This engine is managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with front-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive. Fuel economy across the Sportage’s six trim levels range between 30-33 mpg highway, and 26-28 mpg combined. This engine is simple which tends to go hand-in-hand with reliability.

Kia Sportage Hybrid and PHEV offer more power in performance, longer range, but don’t count out the straightforwardness of a plain gas burning four-cylinder.

2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid Does It All for Less

For this road test, I got behind the wheel of the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD. This is a fully loaded model painted Heritage Blue, at no extra cost, with an MSRP of $41,985.

The Sportage SX-Prestige comes loaded with standard features like 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade, a rear spoiler and roof rack, a wireless charger at the front and multiple USB ports for passengers. In addition to heated/ventilated power seats, power lumbar, leather-wrapped steering wheel, digital heads-up display, fog lights, power lift gate, and even a spare tire.

2026 represents a mid-cycle refresh for the Kia Sportage. Meaning its exterior and interior design has been tweaked and slightly improved. Subtle changes one would only notice on a side-by-side compassion and impossible to ignore once noticed. Like the headlamps, which have been changed from the predecessor’s radical boomerang to a more reserved but very contemporary new shape.

This compact crossover is big on style. Nothing on the road looks like a Kia Sportage, which is a sentence I’d never thought I would write. The small SUV has come a long way from its humble debut in 1993. A proper glow-up with a massive front grille that grins fender to fender, ending with massive cat-eyed headlamps. Its profile appears to have been styled by a gust of wind blowing the A-pillar and windshield back with the slickness of a hair comb lathered in pomade before reaching the end of the roofline.

The rear spoiler adds a nice touch, creating a duck tail end that provides shade to the rear window. The taillights are connected by a slim bar stretched across the lift gate.

I commend Kia for offering some of the most interesting wheel designs as of late. Each one looks like it could decapitate you if thrown by a ninja.

Room to Stretch Inside a Compact Crossover

One of the reasons why the Kia Sportage is such a hot seller, besides the reasonable price and attractive styling is the interior. For 2026, Kia added a new steering wheel to the Sportage that looks nearly identical to the steering wheel featured in a Fox Body era Ford Mustang. In addition, tweaking the air vents and updating the 12.3-inch digital monitors sitting side-by-side on the dashboard.

Seating is comfortable with room for your legs and elbows to roam free. It offers a surprising amount of headroom too with a high ceiling. The center console features a rotary-dial gear selector that is easy to handle, and the retractable cup holders provide plenty of storage space for whatever you carry in your pockets.

Rear passengers can enjoy a smooth ride sitting on plush seats. Rear cargo space is vast with a wide lift gate offering easy access to put large items and the option to fold the rear seats down for added interior room.

The interior color is called Grey but can fool the naked eye into believing it was white. On a sunny day, this interior feels fresh and inviting reflecting the light and gives the affordable Sportage a sincere upscale aesthetic.

Kia Sportage Hybrid Powertrain

The hybrid powertrain featured in the 2026 Kia Sportage is a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder with two electric motors generating a combined output of 231 horsepower. A six-speed automatic transmission manages the engine’s power being sent to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is available and standard on the SX-Prestige. Kia also includes a set of paddle shifters to change gears, but I never saw a need to use them, and I doubt other owners will.

Being the fully loaded SX-Prestige, this Sportage comes with Terrain modes to exercise its AWD system during bad weather or slightly rugged road.

To test fuel economy, I embarked on a one-day road trip from San Antonio to Fort Worth, Texas. This trip covered 240 miles, taking the scenic route through highway 281 over the concrete conveyor belt of construction barrels and Buc-ee’s billboards that litter I-35. During the long drive, the Kia Sportage Hybrid averaged 31 mpg. By the time the low fuel light turned on, I had traveled 360 miles, with 40 miles of range left in the tank.

Styled with Stealth and Luxury

The 2026 Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid X-Line Prestige featured in this review wore a satin shade of Shadow Matte Grey ($595). The Plug-In Hybrid variant of the Kia Sportage stands out with an elegant, fine brushed digital mustached for a front grille.

Considering this meant to be a mild-mannered compact SUV, the Kia Sportage is chuck full of style and presence. Vanilla pudding served in a solid gold bowl. The stealth paint job is complimented by the sneaky quiet powertrain. From certain angles this Sportage looks like something Batman would drive if he needed to take the Bat kids to the Bat little league.

The two-tone interior shown in photos can impress even the snootiest of brand snobs. It looks and feels like a million bucks! When you add this along with class-leading interior space, you start to wonder why people pay double for “luxury” vehicles that don’t offer double the amenities.

The X-Line Prestige model comes loaded with heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, alloy pedals, a panoramic sunroof with a sunshade, and a power lumbar support. In addition to a premium Harmon Kardon audio system with eight speakers.

One detail that must be pointed out is that while driving the digital instrument cluster went dark for a moment. This is reportedly a recall issued by NHTSA, categorized as a software failure. In my case, the instrument cluster came back on after a few minutes and never did it again. But it’s worth mentioning in case anyone has dealt with this issue.

Most Powerful Kia Sportage

The 2026 Kia Sportage PHEV offers the most bang for your buck in terms of performance. The 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine gains a bigger battery pack and a single electric motor to produce a combined 268 horsepower. The PHEV Sportage is only available in all-wheel drive. But the real standout benefit of choosing the PHEV over the regular hybrid or gasoline variant is its EPA-rated 34 miles of all-electric range.

You have the option to plug-in and charge the battery. But the beauty of a PHEV is you don’t really have to charge it. The car itself can regenerate battery life while driving. Granted it won’t be as efficient as plugging into a super charger, but it does provide a more flexible option if all you don’t have a home charger or only want to pump gas instead.

These 34 miles of range allow the Sportage to go further before tapping into its fuel reserves and without needing to deal with cumbersome charging stations. When it does start burning gasoline, the Kia Sportage PHEV has an EPA rating of 36 mpg in the city and 35 mpg highway.

2026 Kia Sportage Pricing

Kia prices the Sportage based on three different levels, gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The entry level gasoline Kia Sportage starts at $28,990 with six trim levels. The middle child hybrid starts at $30,590 with five trim levels. The top-tier plug-in hybrid starts at $40,590 and only comes in two trim levels, with the top-tier X-Line Prestige starting at $47,390.
