Three Mad Max Films Are Being Planned
In the not too distant future there will be more Mad Max movies, but right now we have no idea when that will be.
After the success of 2015 Mad Max Fury Road, film director George Miller had plans continue the franchise. Rumors of 2 Fury Road sequels following Max, played by Tom Hardy, and a Furiosa focused spin-off movie starring Charlize Theron. In 2011, both Miller and his partner/screen writer Brendan McCarthy stated that they had several movie ideas besides Fury Road, with one working title being Mad Max: The Wasteland. Tom Hardy mentioned in an interview with Esquire that he had signed on for 3 more Mad Max movies. So why are they taking so long?
These films are a victim of bad timing. After Fury Road was released director George Miller filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Studio over unpaid earnings and an estimated $7 million bonus. This occurred at the same time WBS was preparing a merger agreement with AT&T. Plus, a growing controversy surrounding WBS’ (now) former Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara who resigned earlier this year over a sex scandal. All this workplace drama has prevented the Mad Max sequels from escaping pre-production purgatory.
However, George Miller is confident that these 3 films will be made. In an interview with Indiewire, Miller stated: “We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen.”
So there is a good chance we will see more Mad Max movies, but nobody knows when that will be. Another Mad Max sequel focusing on Tom Hardy’s take on the Road Warrior would be exciting since he basically rode shotgun to Furiosa in Fury Road. Maybe also bring back the Interceptor and not destroy it within the first 3 minutes of the film perhaps? (Just a suggestion.)
Mad Max Fury Road was a breath of fresh air from the shark jumping Fast n Furious franchise that seem to stray further away from car-culture with each unwanted sequel. Same goes for Transformers!
